The Sherp picks the zaniest of sub-genres of electronic music which are rapidly evolving.

If you thought Electronic Dance Music was all about house, dubstep, trance, electro, drum & bass, techno and disco, you’re very much in the wrong. There are more than a hundred sub-genres you’ve probably never even heard of! The Sherp sifted through them all and has picked 5 wacky genres you should explore.

1. Moombahton

A combination of the words β€œmoombah” and β€œreggaeton”, this blend of house music and reggaeton was started by American DJ Dave Nada. Its rhythms originate from Dutch or electro house slowed down to the tempo of reggaeton. It also includes percussion elements along with thick basslines, dramatic build ups and quick drum fills. The genre saw mainstream success with β€˜Sleaze’ by Knife Party and Diplo’s Express Yourself EP.

2. Bubblegum Dance

You can identify this genre by its cute lyrics and happy sounds. Originating in Scandinavia, this sub-genre of Eurodance music can be described as amusing, cheerful, silly and childish. However, the songs are not always aimed at children. It is common for the artists of this genre to use sexual or suggestive lyrics in their tracks, making it more appropriate for matured grown-ups.

3. Shranz

Derived from techno, this European music style has its origins in Germany. Many people believe the term β€˜Shranz’ to simply mimic the sound of a crunchy lo-fi percussion loop. The sound is harder and its tempo is usually around 150 beats per minute. It is influenced by Detroit Techno with reduced melodic elements. This genre is eminently represented by artists like Carl Cox, Chris Liebing and Adam Beyer.

4. Wonky

This genre is much-debated and has a unique and experimental classification characterized by complex and unusual time signatures. By producing mid-range basses and pitch bending, the wonky sound is achieved – often described as β€œwet and unstable”. It blends dubstep with offbeat hip-hop.

5. Nintendocore

This one fuses aggressive styles of modern rock with video game music and chip music. It has emerged from different styles of hardcore punk and heavy metal. It usually features the adoption of electric guitars, drum kits with rock instruments alongside synthesizers and electronically produced beats. Artists of this genre include The Depreciation Guild, The Megas, Horse the Band, Minibosses and The Advantage among many others.
