Romanian-born producer, Liar, chats with The Sherp. Read on…

Just a few hours before his Mumbai gig, producer and DJ Liar takes out time from his busy schedule to speak with The Sherp.

Sherp: It’s your first time in India, how does it feel to be here?

Liar: It’s surreal. I don’t feel like I’m on the same planet anymore. And I mean that in a good way. Finding it hard to get used to breathing in the smoggy humid curry-ridden air you got here but otherwise everything is mesmerizing throughout.

Sherp: What’s the story behind your DJ name?

Liar: The answer to that is a novel just in itself. Shortest version: to quote Alan Moore, “artists use lies to tell the truth”.

Sherp: If not a DJ, what would be your desired choice of career?

Liar: Novelist. Conceptual sculptor. Fusion/Molecular Gastronomy Chef. Porn director. In that order.

Sherp: Your biggest inspiration(s)?

Liar: Venetian Snares. Burial. Borealis. Lorn. John Maus. Joy Division. Club Cheval. Night Slugs. Justin Martin. French Fries. Phillip K. Dick. William Gibson. Edgar Allan Poe. Søren Kierkegaard. Niccolo Machiavelli. Friedrich Nietzsche. Plato. Baruch Spinoza. Isaac Asimov. Bret Easton Ellis. Michael Jackson. Michael Alig. Prince.Teki Latex. Tiga.Proxy.Kanye West.ODWGKTA.Death Grips. Justice. Daft Punk. TNGHT. Active Child. Meshuggah. The Dillinger Escape Plan. Chuck Palahniuk. Hunter S. Thompson. Krzysztof Penderecki. Salvador Dali. Max Ernst. Marcel Duchamp. Zdzis?awBeksi?ski. Ed Gein.Steven Jay Russell. Rodrigo Borgia. In no particular order.

Sherp: Biggest fail behind the console?

Liar: Had a panic attack, cut set short – nobody realized, I transitioned it flawlessly and left the deck to the sound of applause but I regard it as a personal failure. Otherwise, there’s one time I opened for Zed’s Dead and played half the set with just low-end audible on the PA, but that wasn’t my fault – burn-out sound guy plugged shit in wrong, I had perfect sound on my stage monitors. I don’t fuck up. I make my sets in such a way that I can’t.

Sherp: Best moment behind the console?

Liar: Usually, having the crowd sing along to my own tunes (even ones that have no vocals/lyrics), or otherwise anticipating the breaks/drops in them (gives me the opportunity to subvert that and give them new surprises every time) Tie with impressing two of the Club Cheval (Canblaster and Sam Tiba) dudes when I opened for them.

Sherp: If you had one superpower, what would it be?

Liar: Vampirism, with all implied strengths and weaknesses.

Sherp: Which DJ do you look up to?

Liar: Club Cheval guys. Girl Unit/Bok Bok/L-Vis 1990. Nguzunguzu. Hostage. Justin Martin. Claude VonStroke. Tiga. Brodinski. Bambounou. French Fries. Teki Latex/Sound Pellegrino Thermal Team.

Sherp: Top 3 tracks on your iPod these days?

Liar: Russ Chimes – Turn Me Out

           Kanye West – I Am A God

John Legend – Made To Love
