With 440 people arrested and four people stabbed, not everything was fun and games at the parade.
The Notting Hill Carnival is one of Europe’s largest street parties attracting hundreds of thousands of revellers attending each year. Held since 1964, it has been a way for Afro-Caribbean communities to celebrate their cultures and traditions.
According to Scotland Yard, 156 arrests were made on Sunday, with 284 following on the Bank Holiday Monday. Most of the arrests were made for possession of drugs or weapons offences. On Sunday a 15 year old boy was stabbed in Wornington Road and a 14 year old was arrested while three other males, aged 15 to 20, were also wounded in knife attacks at the opening day of the festival.
Police also reported seizing 26 knives while patrolling the event and a large canister of compressed nitrous oxide (lauging gas) with a street value of over £150,000. Over 1000 people also needed to be treated for alcohol related injuries.
