AfrikaBurn came to be as a kind of extension of Burning Man. Every year, it welcomes people from the oddest corners of the world to come together and build a city or music, art, costumes and dance! Though possessing a much more ‘party vibe’ than that of Burning Man, AfrikaBurn is slightly more colourful than its influences. The breathtaking location, with its rocky deserts and rich sunsets is the perfect way to let go and immerse yourself in on the coolest experiences in the world.

9. Kanamara Matsuri

Where: Kawasaki, Japan
When: April 3

Trust Japan to come up with a festival that celebrates the penis. Well, actually more of a celebration of fertility and life but, yes, also the penis. Every year, the citizens of Kawasaki gather around and parade a fake giant phallus as a way to celebrate the gifts abounded by the nature on mankind, mainly the gift of procreation. Kanamara Matsuri (The festival of the Iron Phallus) has its origins in an equally weird tradition. In the 1600, local prostitutes would gather around and pray for protection against sexually transmitted diseases and slowly this accumulated into the bizarre celebrations we see today! One can witness penis hats, penis floats and penis puppets all through the parade!
