Ever since Facebook renamed their title as Meta on October 28, 2021, there has been a lot of buzz about the new hot topic on the internet. Many look at the Metaverse as the next big thing of the internet known as Web 3 or Web 3.0. Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Meta, spent a lot of time describing the Metaverse and Meta’s future ambitions in the field at the Connect 2021 conference.

It was first talked about back in 1992 by Neal Stephenson in his dystopian cyberpunk novel Snow Crash and next by William Gibson’s Neuromancer that introduced us to the famous virtual reality space called the Matrix.

Metaverse is nothing but reality in VR headsets. Just as in reality, the streets or any area are subject to development, which means anyone from anywhere can develop any street or area of their liking in the Metaverse. One can build parks, buildings, theatres, playgrounds or even things that are impossible to be made in reality. Similar to building, one can explore these places in their avatars as well.

The movie β€œReady Player One” is probably the best visual example of Metaverse. The movie ignores the rules of three-dimensional spacetime and gives an immersive experience of how free combat zones where avatars fight each other in the Metaverse would look like.

In short, Metaverse has many different meanings as per one’s understanding and perspective. One thing we all can now agree on is that there is a very thin line that is beyond recognition between virtual reality and reality. Mark Zuckerberg wrote to his employees, β€œAn embodied internet where you’re in the experience, not just looking at it. We call this the Metaverse, and it will touch every product we build.”
