The last week had everyone chattering about the Supermoon – the coincidence of a full moon or a new moon with the closest approach it makes to the Earth on its given orbit. This results in the largest apparent size of the moon as seen from the earth. In a year, there are 4 – 6 supermoons on an average.

Full moon parties are really just an excuse to celebrate! To honor this rare occurrence, The Sherp has put together a list of moon-pertinent festivals that happen around the world!

1. Full Moon Party, Thailand

This party is held on the night of, before or after every full moon on the magnificent island of Ko Pha Ngan. The all-night beach party attracts a crowd of 10,000 – 30,000 people each month! The celebration starts at dusk, when the yellow round moon appears over the white sands of the beach. In the afterglow, small tables are lined up on the beach and thousands of lamps are lit. As the night gets darker, the shore bursts into a dancing frenzy. Treat yourself to the sight of jugglers, fire-eaters and brilliant impromptu fireworks in the starlit black sky!

2. Full Moon Down Under, Australia

Started in 2004, this party has become Australia’s answer to Ko Pha Ngan. Held in the beautiful BASE Magnetic Island’s beach-side location, this one too takes place every month. The festival has attracted some big talents like Benny Benassi, Martin Solveig and The Ashton Shuffle among other handpicked international and local DJs. So if Australia is your next destination for a vacation, head to this iconic monthly outdoor party and let your body lose control until the sun comes up!

3. Super Moon Music & River Festival, Kentucky

This festival has a lot more to offer than just good music. It takes place amongst the alluring wilderness of Carson Island in Elkhorn City. You can treat yourself to adventuresome outdoor activities like hiking, sight-seeing, kayaking, boating, inner-tubing and swimming in The Russel Fork River. The line-up includes several bands jamming music live on the stage!

4. Full Moon Music Festival, New York

This summer music event takes place on Governors Island, in the center of New York Harbor. It gets its inspiration from the famous parties of Southeast Asia and of course, the mythical power of the full moon. Blurring the line between a festival and a dance party, this music extravaganza aims to bring out New York’s distinct culture and edge. This transcendental beach party is not-to-be-missed. Witness the best of sounds, art and food!

5. The High Full Moon Party, Pune

High Spirits Café is acknowledged for its insane theme parties, and the Full Moon Party is an absolute banger you don’t want to miss! The party recently had 3 different DJs playing 3 different genres of music on 3 different stages, with vessels of alcohol flowing everywhere! At High, you’re in for a night you may or may not remember!
