Festivals are on the rise all over the world. Here is a look at some of the best festivals in June’13.

 

1.Β Boi Bumba

When: June 28th-July 1st

Hosted on the Brazilian Isle of Paratins, Boi Bumba is one of the most exciting folk festivals in the world. Filled with music, dance, and folklore – Boi Bumba is a mesmerizing display of revelry, comparable to the festivities that are abound at Rio’s Carnival.

 

2.Β Glastonbury

When: June 26th-30th

For five days every year, England’s Pilton Farm plays host to the largest greenfield music and performing arts festival in the world. This tented city gathers music legends from nearly every genre imaginable, and spreads them across 50 stages for a hugely entertaining, once-in-a-lifetime experience.

 

3.Β AIA Sandcastle

When: June 1st

For over two decades, teams of architects, designers, and engineers have taken the tools of their trades and descended upon Galveston, Texas’ East Beach, to participate in the world’s largest and most competitive sandcastle contest.

When: May 30th-June 21st

Hosted across Auckland’s major galleries, project spaces, and public sites – Auckland Festival of Photography is a city-wide contemporary art and cultural event that showcases the works of both emerging and established artists.

 

5.Β Banana-Split Festival

When: June 7th-8th

Akin to most rivalries, this festival was born out of an ownership dispute between the neighboring states of Ohio and Pennsylvania. But unlike most rivalries, the quarrel was over which state first invented the banana split. After nearly a century of bickering, the Banana Split Festival was born to celebrate the marvel that is this culinary delight.

 

6.Β Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Festival

When: June 12th

Held on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, the Dragon Boat Festival sees teams of paddlers race their colorful boats to the beat of drums and the cheering of huge crows filled with locals and tourists alike.

 

7.Β LA Pride

When: June 7th-9th

Held in Los Angeles’ beautiful West Hollywood Park, LA Pride is the largest gathering of the LGBTQ community in Southern California. This year also promises to be a grand ol’ time with live entertainment, new dance venues, numerous exhibitors, food and drink vendors, and thousands of members of the vibrant and active Los Angeles community.

 

8.Β Midnight Sun Film Festival

When: June 16th

An annual five-day film festival hosted in Sodankyla, Finland – Midnight Sun Film Festival has a unique theme of showing films without a break all day and night long, while the sun keeps on shining. One of the few non-competitive film fests, MSFF showcases contemporary Finnish and International films.

 

9.Β The Monterey Beer Festival

When: June 15th

Hosted at the Monterey County Fair & Event Center, the Monterey Beer Festival brings together beers from over 80 breweries, with local vendors serving up delicious grub to complement the wide variety of beverages.

 

10.Β Moscow International Film Festival

When: June 20th-29th

One of the oldest film festivals in the world, MIFF has always been a mirror of social and political change that has taken place in the country. Now in its 35th year, MIFF always gathers together a horde of world-renowned film-makers, journalists and film critics.

 

11.Β Rock Im Park

When: June 7th-9th

Rock Am Ring and Rock Im Park are two simultaneous rock music festivals held annually in Germany. While one is held in the west, the other is held in the south of Germany. Both festivals have mostly an identical lineup – and are together considered one of the largest music festivals in the world.

When: June 15th-24th

Dating back to the 15th century, Calcio Storico is a violent mix of football, soccer, wrestling and boxing. Tournament participants don medieval garb and put forth an epic sporting battle on the pretty streets of Florence.

When: June 30th

The last Sunday of June will see people dressed up in 18th century clothing, lined up along the Arno, and attempting to push an eight ton wooden block through the ranks of the other team in hopes of knocking over their flag.

 

14.Β Isle of Wight Festival

When: June 13th-16th

Held on England’s Isle of Wight, the 1970 music event was considered the largest and most famous of the early festivals. The festival’s revival in 2002 has since seen the likes of The Rolling Stones, The Who, David Bowie and the Police take to the stage.

 

15.Β Annecy International Animation Film Festival

When: June 10th-15th

A competitive film festival held in Annecy, France – ASIFA showcases animated films that have used various techniques in categories such as features, shorts, and student films. The festival also organizes an open-air projection amongst the lakes and mountains of the town.
