The Cannes 2016 list offers a diverse assortment of films, from drama to documentary, forΒ all the cinemaΒ aficionadosΒ out there.

In what seems to be a great year for female artists and cinema in general, Cannes 2016 will be ruled by the stunning performances of actresses like Kristen Stewart, Marion Cotillard, LΓ©a Seydoux, Charlize Theron, Elle Fanning,Β Ruth Negga,Β Kim Min-hee,Β Jeannie Berlin,Β Isabelle Huppert andΒ Sasha Lane as they take lead in some of the best films previewing at the festival.

The Festival de Cannes is widely considered as one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world. Held in Cannes, France, the annual invite-only festival previews the best of films from every genre, including documentaries, from around the world. Every year at the hallowed grounds of the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, everyone from the film industry elite to upcoming artists can be seen at the celebration of the artistic medium that is cinema.

1. The Last Face

The Last Face is an American drama film directed by Sean Penn and written by Erin Dignam. The film stars Charlize Theron, Javier Bardem, AdΓ¨le Exarchopoulos and Jean Reno. This marks Sean Penn’s return to Cannes after almostΒ a decade.

Synopsis : A director (Charlize Theron) of an international aid agency in Africa meets a relief aid doctor (Javier Bardem) amidst a political/social revolution, and together face tough choices surrounding humanitarianism and life through civil unrest.

 

2. Neon Demon

One of the most hyped movies this year, Neon Demon features Elle Fanning in the lead role. Masterfully directed byΒ Nicolas Winding Refn, the film also stars Keanu Reeves and Christina Hendricks.

Synopsis : When aspiring model Jesse moves to Los Angeles, her youth and vitality are devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women who will take any means necessary to get what she has.

 

3. Gimme Danger

Gimme Danger is an American documentary film directed by Jim Jarmusch about the punk band The Stooges.Β Named after a 1973 song by the band, Jarmusch’s second feature documentary centers on the band’s frontman Iggy Pop, considered by many to be the godfather of punk rock.

4. Dog Eat Dog

Synopsis :Β Dog Eat Dog is the story of three men out of prison and now have the task of adapting themselves to civilian life. The California three strikes law looms over them but they must commit one last perfect crime. But in the aftermath, they keep finding the law surrounding them wherever they go.

 

5. Loving

Loving is a British-American drama film directed and written by Jeff Nichols. The film stars Joel Edgerton, Ruth Negga, Michael Shannon, and Nick Kroll.

Synopsis : Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple, are sentenced to prison in Virginia in 1958 for getting married.

6. It’s Only the End of the World

It’s Only the End of the World, is a Canadian-French drama film written, edited and directed by Xavier Dolan. The film is based on the play Juste la fin du monde by Jean-Luc Lagarce. The film stars Gaspard Ulliel, Nathalie Baye, Marion Cotillard, LΓ©a Seydoux and Vincent Cassel.

Synopsis :Β Louis, a terminally ill writer, returns home after 12 years of absence to announce his impending death to his family. A reunion filled with doubts and tensions ensues.

 

7. The Handmaiden

The Handmaiden is a South Korean film based on the novel Fingersmith by Sarah Waters and directed by Park Chan-wook (of Oldboy fame).

Synopsis :Β A woman is hired as a handmaiden to a Japanese heiress, but secretly she is involved in a plot to defraud her.

8. CafΓ© Society

CafΓ© Society is an American romantic comedy-drama film written and directed by the legendaryΒ Woody Allen. The film has a star studded cast with the likes ofΒ Jeannie Berlin, Steve Carell, Jesse Eisenberg, Blake Lively, Parker Posey, Kristen Stewart, Corey Stoll, and Ken Stott.

Synopsis :Β A young man arrives in Hollywood during the 1930s hoping to work in the film industry. There, he falls in love, and finds himself swept up in the vibrant cafΓ© society that defined the spirit of the age.

 

9. American Honey

Synopsis :Β A teenage girl with nothing to lose joins a traveling magazine sales crew, and gets caught up in a whirlwind of hard partying, law bending and young love as she criss-crosses the Midwest with a band of misfits.

 

10. Elle

Elle is a French psychological thriller directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by David Birke, based on the novel Oh… by Philippe Djian, and starring Isabelle Huppert. It is Verhoeven’s first feature film in ten years after his 2006 film Black Book, and his first in French language. It has been selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2016

Synopsis : The story of Michèle, a businesswoman who is raped in her home by an unknown assailant and then later stalks him back.
