Shambala will be UK’s first greenfield festival to be free of meat and fish on the event grounds, in an attempt to do their bit for the environment.

The move has obviously drawn mixed reactions, and the festival’s idea of a protein source, other than meat and fish, is having insect bars, which they’re calling “the protein of the future”.

This move, however, hasn’t affected ticket sales at all, much to the amusement of the festival’s organisers. Shambala sold out despite the new ruling.

The organisers have handpicked food vendors to show the diversity in vegetarian cooking. Despite the ruling, visitors can bring their own meat if they want to, which should come as a relief for most festival goers.

The co-founder, Sidharth Sharma, had this to say to The Guardian:Β β€œWe’re not saying that people shouldn’t eat meat but we want to show that on this site we can prove how great eating in a different way can be.”

We’ll have to wait for Shambala to start, to see whether their plan has worked or not. For now, munch on those insect bars!
