Sorry folks! There isn’t going to be a clitoris festival in Spain anytime soon.

Everyone’s familiar with the strange and sometimes embarrassing mistakes Google Translate makes. But this one really took it to the next level.Β Organisers of the local festival centred onΒ grelo,Β a leafy green vegetable that’s a staple in the town of As Pontes in Spain, were understandably surprised when they heard what they were supposedly celebrating. Much to their embarrassment, Google Translate had the internet trumpeting a “Clitoris Festival” in the Galician town. This is what the vegetable actually looks like:

Every February, β€œFeria do grelo” or Rapini Festival is a event held at the Galician town with tastings and awards for the best grelos.Β While the wordΒ greloΒ translates to the harmless vegetable in Galician, Google wielded its linguistic power and decided to translate it in Castillian Spanish.Β The translated announcement read: β€œThe clitoris is one of the typical products of Galician cuisine. Since 1981 … the festival has made the clitoris one of the star products of its local gastronomy.” *insert facepalm here*

Officials in As Pontes are pretty pissed off about the whole snafu.Β β€œIt was quite a surprise,” Montserrat GarcΓa, the town’s spokeswoman, told the Guardian. β€œAt first, we didn’t believe what we were seeing.” Even though the error has been corrected, town officials have admitted that there has been an upside to the whole event.Β β€œIt’s become a means – albeit a very odd means – of promoting our festival,” said GarcΓa. But all this does make us wonder, if there really was a “clitoris festival”, what would it be like?
