His life and legacy is being celebrated!

George Michael, the “Careless Whisper” singer who rocketed to stardom with WHAM! and went on to continue a celebrated solo career, died on Christmas Day 2016 and successfully embedded memories of a Christmas Day that will leave a sour taste in our mouth for years to come. It shouldn’t come as a surprise to us that his song “Last Christmas” has skyrocketed to the top of all streaming platforms. The song was released by his band Wham!

The pop star died of a heart failure at 53 and his body was discovered by his partner Fadi Fawaz, 43, in bed at home. He told his followers, “It’s a Xmas I will never forget; finding your partner dead peacefully in bed first thing in the morning.. I will never stop missing you xx.”

The internet exploded immediately once the news was out, thanks to the dedicated fans and articles on our Facebook timelines, the insides of every magazine and newspaper and the uncountable playlists of George Michael’s records curated by his fans. He has passed away but the world remembers his contribution and his music has experienced a sudden surge in popularity.

Even a song that was never heard before, written and recorded by George Michael before his death, was shared by Fadi Fawaz. “This Kind Of Love” was recorded in the 1990s, but the track never made it to the spotlight, until now.

George’s family have also spoken out and thanked fans for the over-brimming love they have been receiving. “For someone whose life was ultimately about his music and the love he had for his family and friends, his fans and the world at large, there could be no more fitting tribute than the many, many, kind words that have been said and the numerous plays his records have received,” a family statement said.

Most of George Michael’s fans, like us, have been listening to his songs on repeat on Spotify. Just 24 hours after his passing away was announced, his discography had already spread across social media and recorded a jump of 3,158 percent globally, according to Spotify. Top streamed songs from Michael and Wham! include “Faith”, “Freedom! ’90” and “Wake Me up Before You Go-Go.”

George Michael and Wham!’s music is also performing well on iTunes. As Idolator said, at least 10 well-known songs from the singer-songwriter leapt into the top 100 on the digital music storefront. Tracks like “Father Figure”, “I Want Your Sex”, “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” and “Everything She Wants” have also been performing fairly well, as have a number of George Michael’s albums!

When the charts restart on Monday, we will probably see his name in the Billboard’s streaming charts and even in the Hot 100.
