The modern blues superstar grooves amidst butterflies and panda bears in Japanese inspired video!
With about a week for John Mayer’s seventh full-length album The Search For Everything set to drop on April 14th, the singer-songwriter has fulfilled long-standing fan requests to see him dance in a music video. The groovy-yet -languid track from Wave 2 of the upcoming LP features a colourful Japanese themed set with butterflies, panda bears, martial arts, kimonos and sync choreography. The engaging dance sequence choreographed by Lisa Eaton, who’s worked with Madonna and Maroon 5 in the past, has been described as “disco dojo” , by Mayer in a recent interview.

Mayer expected backlash for the video and being called out for ‘cultural appropriation’, he clarifies, “Part of cultural appropriation is blindness. I’m on the right side of the line because it’s an idea for the video that has a very multi-ethnic casting, and nobody who is white or non-Asian is playing an Asian person … I think we were as sensitive as we could possibly be. We discussed it at every juncture.”
The RnB-meets-pop in quintessential Mayer style ballad, reminds the musician who’s approaching 40 (years of age) of the non-existent musical genre “ancient Japanese R&B.” The director of the video, Mister Whitmore explained that he and Mayer “thought long and hard about how to approach the clip’s ‘fantasy element’ without offending anyone. I hope there’s an understanding that we were sensitive to it.”
