Lollapalooza Chicago’s 25th year has finally concluded, and The Sherp has the lowdown on the best moments during this year’s edition!
Lollapalooza, in the last 25 years, has really grown as a festival, with editions in multiple countries and bigger and better headliners and lineups every year. It has come a long way since its humble beginnings in Chicago, and has had some memorable moments in the past.
Here are some moments that stood out from the rest this year:
1. MO’s epic stage diving skills
Breakout star MO leapt into the crowd towards the end of her biggest track ever, Lean On with Major Lazer and DJ Snake, much to everyone’s amazement. It was quite a moment nonetheless. The rain-soaked audience reveled in the music on offer.
2. Tom Morello’s surprise appearance
Tom Morello hinted that he was coming to Lolla on his Twitter account. He came on stage not once, but twice; he teamed up with X Ambassadors on a collaboration called Collider, and he came out for a second time with Jane’s Addiction, and they teamed up for Mountain Song. This has been the year of surprise appearances on stage at festivals.
3. Radiohead’s amazing performance
Radiohead was quite a spectacle. From all the lights on display, to the crowd singing along to “Karma Police”, their final song of the day, Radiohead pulled all the stops at Lollapalooza. They played out hits from their newest album A Moon Shaped Pool, as well as some older ones like “Everything in Its Right Place” and “Lucky”. This one wasn’t to be missed at any cost.
4. Grimes’ unbridled energy
Arguably the most energetic set of the festival, Grimes went all out. She performed with her two twisted ankles, so that’s saying something. She screamed and sang her heart out throughout the set, and the crowd responded joyously, with screams of “I love her so much” from some people. Grimes is one of the most distinct electropop acts today, and her set at Lollapalooza proved so.
5. LCD Soundsystem
Ever since their reunion, LCD Soundsystem has been tearing up headlining spots at many festivals, and Lollapalooza was no less. What’s more; before their set on Sunday, they had two shows at Metro in Chicago. The crowd responded accordingly, and after 4 full days of relentless partying, if there’s one band that can still make your feet move, it’s LCD Soundsystem.
6. Flosstradamus bringing out Chance The Rapper
As always, Flosstradamus’ set was filled with drops, but the Chicago natives weren’t done. They brought out Chance The Rapper to everyone’s disbelief, to perform “Summer Friends”. Chance went on to do another cameo during Future’s Lollapalooza set.
