It was a long night at Royalty… and The Sherp didn’t want it to end!
The Sherp arrived at midnight at Royalty while the local upcoming talent DJ AJ was dropping some insanely melodic tracks, setting the perfect atmosphere for the sheer madness that lay ahead. The crowd was bustling yet waiting in anticipation for the genius Mat Zo to take to the decks.
He finally did. And HOW!
The 23-year-old wunderkind made a powerful appearance on stage. No one had the slightest clue about the track he would open with, and no one could have guessed it right. The crowd at Royalty went berserk when Mat dropped Eric Prydz’s Layers. What followed was an unrelenting two-hour set of an amalgamation of dance music sub-genres that could only be pulled off by a powerhouse of talent like Zo.
Mat skillfully and patiently built up the energy at the club with extended transitions, aggressive house beats and drop in tempos. As the crowd begged for a dramatic kick, we heard Zo dropping the lyrics ‘What is this obsession I have for you? It’s not love, or lust…’ and the crowd soared in unison to Bang La Deck’s Kuedon.
Flaunting an irresistible boyish charm behind the decks, Mat Zo poured out one classic after another which included tracks like his latest collaboration with Chuck D Pyramid Scheme, Arty & Zo’s Rebound, Man With The Red Face by Mark Knight & Funkagenda, Knife Party’s Lrad, Nuke by Wolfgang Gartner and many other destroying-the-dancefloor-tracks (and mashups)!
The crowd exploded with energy when Mat played Above & Beyond’s Walter White followed by Martin Garrix’s Animals and England by fellow-Anjunabeats artist Andrew Bayer. He even dropped a eargasmic remix of his favorite duo – Daft Punk’s Get Lucky! But the highlights of the night had to be when he dropped Deadmau5’s Raise Your Weapon, a euphoric mashup of Sun & Moon and Strobe, Hardwell’s Spaceman, and his own chart-toppers like Easy and Mozart.
And finally, it was time for the last track of the night (or should we say almost-wee-hours-of-the-morning?). Just when everyone was wondering why he did not play his monster track with Linnea Schossow, Mat wrapped up the exhilarating night with The Sky.
The truly appealing thing about a Mat Zo set is that you have no idea what you’re going to hear. The Sherp is irreversibly enamored by Mat Zo’s performance.
