There are dog people, and then there are people who find their soulmates amongst furry canines. If you love dogs in all shapes and sizes, this film festival is perfect for you.
After the 2015 Internet Cat Film Festival screened at the Museum of Arts and Design in Manhattan last week, it wasn’t long before the dog-people decided they had to one-up the cat-people. The first ever New York Dog Film Festival will have 40 short films, screened over two sessions at Symphony Space on the Upper West Side, NYC, on October 3. The films lined up are sweet, hilariously cute, and sometimes heartbreaking only the way dog films can be. The festival will delve into the bond between dogs and humans, to show that it runs deeper than just the idea of “man’s best friend”.
Some of the films are ridiculously cute, and funny, like “The Hardly Boys in Hardly Gold” by William Wegman, a deadpan comedy with costumed dogs-as-humans sniffing out a mystery, a “Courage the Cowardly Dog” cartoon, films about surfing dogs, circus poodles and canine cosmonauts, a film about a geneticist who becomes a dog, and not to mention “Game of Bones”, which is a cuddlier reimagining of the HBO show. Then of course, there are the films that will make you reach for the tissues, like Sue Carpenter’s “There’s Something About Molly”, which is based on her black Lab who died 4 years prior to the film’s making.

Many of the dogs starring in these films plan to attend the festival with their humans, and they’ll be plodding across the “green carpet” to watch themselves on the big screen. If you’re a dog person, you’ll find that this festival is definitely after your own heart.
