From open-air concerts to after-dark sessions to a fancy dress ball, the AFROPUNK Fest has it all. On 21st, 22nd and 23rd August 2015, Brooklyn will lend itself to this enigmatic, one-of-a-kind festival that celebrates unconventional, non-conforming cultural expression.
AFROPUNK is not just a festival, it’s a community of like-minded, influential people of all backgrounds, who find expression in music, art, film, comedy, fashion and more. It began with the 2003 documentary that highlighted an Black presence in the American punk scene, and has been growing and branching out ever since. A punk sensibility is core to the entire community, with a DIY aesthetic and radical thought, placing it at “the epicenter of urban culture inspired by alternative music”. AFROPUNK is “a voice for the unwritten, unwelcome and unheard-of, redefining the urban experience”.

The actual festival is a two day multicultural explosion in Commodore Park Brooklyn, New York City, and artists perform from all kinds of genres – some of them established and some new, experimental artists. This year’s lineup includes big names Lenny Kravitz, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Kelis, Danny Brown and many more.
After Dark
AFROPUNK does not end when the park closes. The After Dark sessions in the streets bars and restaurants of Brooklyn transform the neighbourhood into a entrancing playground of music, art, comedy and entertainment. It makes for the perfect nightcap, with intimate popup performances, celebrity DJ sets, comedy shows, film screenings, art installations, Story Slams, and drink specials.
Fancy Dress Ball
This year’s AFROPUNK will introduce its first ever Fancy Dress Ball, which is this community’s attempt to give something back to people. On the evening of Friday, August 21st, Commodore Park will be home to a gorgeous costume party to raise funds for the AFROPUNK Global Initiative, which is dedicated to the promotion of diversity in music and the arts, as well as volunteer service.
