Despite the innumerable petitions the festival is happening again!
The barbaric festival that takes place at Yulin in Southern China this June goes on for about 10 days and sees as many as 15, 000 dogs slaughtered to be eaten. The local government has in recent years sought to disassociate itself from the event, forbidding its employees from attending and limiting its size by shutting down some dog markets and slaughter houses. The global media, press, activists and celebrities have come together to take a stand against the event with several petitions, campaigns, protests, videos etc. However, in a matter of 3 months the sickening festival will take place once again.

The estimated figure of about 15,000 dogs, slaughtered at the festival, could be even higher in reality. The dogs are snared around the neck with metal hooks and dragged from their cages. Some are forced to travel a long distance, crammed into wired cages only to be burned and boiled alive. Reportedly, even pet dogs with their collars still on are stolen from all over the country. Close to 226,800 kgs of dog meat is consumed every year in the city. The city of Yulin has over 100 dog slaughter houses.

The festival witnesses thousands of dogs hanging upside down on the street, blood reeling from their body, some of them crying due to unbearable pain with spectators enjoying the sight. Animal lovers, celebrities, the press and activists have raised their voice repeatedly over the years to abandon the festival. However, no concrete action was taken as a result. The most recent petition calls out to abolish the event completely:
“Outraged and feeling desperate to do something, anything for these helpless dogs, …. — it’s time to STOP the Yulin Dog Meat Festival permanently! Anyone who has ever had a dog knows how sensitive, loyal, loving and trusting dogs are. Please sign my petition to help END this despicable festival for good.”
