This is a major victory for animal rights.

Around the world animals are subjected to various kinds of cruelty at the hands of humans, be it for food or fun. Luckily good Samaritans A.K.A. animal rights activists, have been constantly working to put an end to these practices. Most recently on Thursday, these activists managed to get the government to outlaw the killing of bulls at an annual town festival in Spain.

The law was passed by the regional government of Castile and León, banning bull killings at the annual Toro de la Vega festival in the town of Tordesillas. This is part of a major step towards banning such festivities all across Spain where bulls are always the target such atrocities. While the ban did not address bullfighting, the industry has languished in recent years as revenues and government subsidies have declined. The Toro de la Vega festival is particularly gruesome as bulls are killed with spears after being pursued on foot and horseback.

The regional decree states that the ban is in response to the increasing number of protests against animal cruelty. It also notes that though these festivals are part of the country’s cultural heritage, modern lawmakers need to recognize the changing times, sensitivities and ethics of Spaniards.
