Having exploded in 2012 with releases on labels such as Toolroom, MODA, Blockhead, Maquina and Ministry Of Sound, London’s Vanilla Ace has created his own identity as one of the country’s best house/disco producers. Here are a few of his top musical selections

1. Zapp ft. Roger Troutman – ‘So ruff so tuff’

“I’m a big fan of funk, soul and disco. These guys made some of the funkiest tunes ever and were responsible for many West Coast hip hop groups main samples.”

2. Prince and The Revolution – ‘Purple rain’

“A movie I grew up watching and then listened to (the soundtrack) even more during my teenage years. The man is a genius.”

3. Jodeci – ‘Alone’

“This song is so smooth, makes me close my eyes and think of cruising through LA on a hot summers night. These guys were my favourite R&B group growing up in the ’90s.”

4. Royskopp – ‘What else is there’ (Trentemoller Remix)

“A stunning remix by Trentemoller, I used to play this out loads when it came out and still sneak it into my DJ sets when I can.”

5. Soldiers of Twilight – ‘Believe’ (Martin Solveig)

“I remember buying this on vinyl in London and thinking what a sexy cool remix it was. To be honest I don’t like the music Solveig makes now but he used to make AMAZING music, he needs to go back to that.”

6. Patrice Rushen – ‘Remind me’

“Amazing ’80s soul groove, if I could, I’d love to work with her”

7. Michael Jackson – ‘Liberian girl’

“One of my favourite MJ tunes that’s on my iPhone, the harmonies that come in at the end are amazing.”

8. Daft Punk – ‘Aerodynamic’

“Such a well thought out tune, I remember hearing this for the first time and thinking ‘Wow’. I sampled this for a tune I made for UK Grime legend Wiley on a track called ‘Summertime’ ”

9. Debarge – ‘I like it’

“Another 80’s soul classic, great groove and vocals.”

10. Jamiroquai – ‘Stillness in time’

“Such a great band and happy to say they are from the UK as well. I remember seeing them in concert at their peak, a tight band! ”
